Food Frontiers 2.0 (Application Form)

Food Frontiers 2.0 is an innovation challenge with a focus to identify innovative business ideas, affordable and replicable technological solutions, and campaign ideas to contribute to securing food and nutrition for the marginalised population who are at the bottom of the pyramid. The challenge is jointly organized by Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Business Network (Co-convened by Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and World Food Programme (WFP)).

The objective of this innovation challenge is to:
Identify new and innovative ways to reach lower-income consumers with nutritious food products;

  • Build capacity of youth entrepreneurs on sustainable food systems approach and business skills for managing social enterprise.
  • Co-design business models that are geared towards improving the nutrition outcome of the food system, particularly for the most vulnerable; and
  • Build a pipeline of potential investments for disruptive innovative ideas for the food system of Bangladesh.

The objective of this innovation challenge is to:

Selection Criterion

  1. Affordability: The cost of an innovation to the intended user. The solutions must address the BoP segment of consumers.
  2. Scalability: An innovation ability to achieve widespread adoption and positive impact in the next few years. With the plan of scaling up the idea, the enterprises must include the room for investment.
  3. Socioeconomic Impact Potential: The extent to which an innovation produces broader socioeconomic improvements as a result of adoption (e.g., impacts on the incomes of those who work in the food system). 
  4. Usability: The simplicity and ease of use for end-users, the degree to which it is designed for end-users, and the effectiveness of the innovation at accomplishing the intended task.
  5. Adaptability: The extent to which an innovation is fit to low-resource contexts in diverse areas of the country.
  6. Nutritional Impact Forecast: The extent to which innovation adoption is projected to support improved nutrition outcomes in the target communities.
  7. Inclusion of women and youth: Solutions put forward by women and youth entrepreneurs, as well as those that particularly serve those populations, will be prioritized.

Grants and Cash Prizes

Two benefits will be provided to the participants. First is the opportunity to learn from the industry experts, meet the investors, and gain exposure in the national media. From the shortlisted candidates, a total of 10 will have the chance to attend a bootcamp. After the bootcamp, the judges composed of academia, industry expert, development professionals, and business leaders will select two winners for each thematic area. 

The second benefit, for these winners, will be a Infrastructure support and cash prize: A physical infrastructure grant for scaling up the idea worth USD 10,000 (1st Prize) and USD 5,000 (2nd Prize) for the winners of the thematic area on Inclusive Business Model. A physical infrastructure grant worth USD 8,000 (1st Prize) and USD 3,000 (2nd Prize) for the winners of the thematic area on disruptive technological innovation and a cash grant USD 5,000 (1st Prize) and USD 2,000 (2nd Prize) for innovation in increasing desirability of nutritious food. In addition, from 3 International Nutrition Olympiad competitors, the winner will receive USD 2,500 cash grant. A total of USD 35,500 will be awarded.

Thematic Areas of Food Frontiers 2.0 

There are three core thematic areas where the competition will receive applications:

Inclusive Business Model for Reaching Lower-income Consumers: Under this thematic area we expect applications coming from early-stage social enterprises / start-ups to develop inclusive business models for reaching lower-income consumers with nutritious foods. Such innovations must reach these people where they live, and at an affordable price. These double bottom-line ideas or ventures address both the profitability and social benefits.
Disruptive Technological Innovation:
in this thematic area we expect application from individual business with technological innovation to improve traceability, reduce food wastage, design approach on regenerative agriculture etc. These technological innovations need to support a pivot to sustainable food production systems and must be user friendly for the wider population.
Innovative Marketing Campaigns:
in this thematic area we expect application from individual businesses/personnel to make nutritious food more aspiring and creating demand for nutritious food products coming out of sustainable production systems. The existing campaigns/ ideas need to be focused to the lower-income population.
